Fairmont Hotel

Fairmont Hotel

The iconic Fairmont Hotel, known as the “White House of the West,” is famous for hosting kings and every U.S. president since William Howard Taft in 1910. More recently, it gained fame when Keanu Reeves and Ali Wong spent an evening with friends in the luxury penthouse suite featured in the Netflix rom-com Always Be My Maybe.

Built in 1907 in the toney Nob Hill neighborhood, the hotel encompasses a whole block and offers 591 newly renovated guest rooms and suites with views of the Bay Area. The front features the original 6-story building and the back is a newer, more contemporary Tower Building. I stayed in a Tower room, a few steps from the rooftop garden that has a circular water fountain and splendid views overlooking the city. There’s also a pretty park across the hotel with paved walkways, historic statues, and a children’s playground for the family. The city’s famous cable cars occasionally ride past with bells ringing, momentarily breaking up the quiet air. The Fairmont is centrally located so it’s a short taxi ride to most destinations. After a day of exploring, return to the opulent lobby with gold-tone sectional sofas and wind down with a cool drink, or head to the Laurel Room and enjoy the hotel’s iconic Afternoon Tea that began 115 years ago. In addition to its gracious staff and luxury amenities– the grand Fairmont has a feeling of history and heritage that one cannot find at any other hotel.
